Chin Implant

A chin implant, also known as mentoplasty, is a surgical procedure where a solid implant is placed in the chin area to enhance its projection and shape, creating a more balanced facial profile. This procedure is often sought by individuals looking to improve the definition and symmetry of their chin for aesthetic purposes.

Chin Implant Explained

A chin implant, also referred to as chin augmentation or mentoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the size and shape of the chin for aesthetic purposes. It involves the placement of a solid implant, typically made of silicone or other biocompatible materials, over the chin bone to improve its projection and contour.

Chin implants are commonly sought by individuals looking to address a weak or recessed chin, as well as those seeking to achieve better facial proportions and overall facial harmony. By enhancing the projection and definition of the chin, a chin implant can improve facial balance and aesthetic appeal. The procedure is particularly beneficial for individuals with a receding chin or a disproportionately small chin in relation to other facial features.

Benefits of a Chin Implant

By improving chin projection and contour, a chin implant procedure can have several notable benefits, including:
  • Enhanced Facial Balance: A chin implant can help bring harmony to facial features by creating better proportions, particularly for individuals with a weak or recessed chin.
  • Improved Profile: By augmenting the chin, the overall profile of the face can appear more balanced and aesthetically pleasing.
  • Long-lasting Results: Chin implants typically provide permanent enhancement to the chin's size and shape, offering enduring results for patients.
  • Customizable Options: Chin implants come in various shapes and sizes, allowing for customization to suit each patient's unique facial anatomy and desired outcome.
  • Minimal Downtime: While some swelling and bruising may occur initially, recovery from a chin implant procedure is generally relatively quick, with patients often able to resume normal activities within a few days to a week.

Chin Implant FAQs

People born with poorly defined chin may desire mentoplasty for better facial balance. Procedure is sought after by women and men to correct receding chin and provide more attractive look of distinction. Sometimes procedure is performed for those born with congenital defects. Chin augmentation is frequently performed in combination with nasal surgery (rhinoplasty)

The procedure is usually performed under intravenous sedation (light anesthesia) but can be performed under only local anesthesia with or without oral sedation. It is an outpatient surgery, with patients going to recover in the comfort of their homes within a couple hours from surgery. A single incision is either placed under the chin or inside the mouth for access to place the implant, which is made up of a very safe and stable silicone or a porous synthetic material. The size of the implant is typically pre-determined during a consultation performed with a help of a Mirror 3D imaging system. The implant is then inserted and secured in place before closing the incision.

Each implant is available in a selection of sizes, thicknesses, and projections. Our office offers the following chin implant options:

  • Central Chin Implants: This implant is available in the original chin implant shape and provides various degrees of chin projection.
  • Anatomical Chin Implants: Chin augmentation in conjunction with mild to moderate contouring of the front part of the jaw are provided with the use of this chin implant. Two wings positioned at 45-degree angles allow the implant to contour to the front portion of the mandibular bone (jawbone), which provides better stability and smoother lines.
  • Extended Anatomical Chin Implants: With the extended version of the anatomical implant, the ‘wings’ are extended in length to provide further enhancement of the jawline, and to create a more angular or square jawline structure. The wings taper along the lower mandibular ridge in a “wrap-around” design for better restoration of the mandibular support structure. This implant can also be used to correct the appearance of jowls.

Modern chin implants are designed to closely mimic the natural contours of the chin, resulting in a seamless integration with surrounding facial features. With proper placement and sizing tailored to individual anatomy, the implant should both look and feel natural.

Chin implants are designed to provide permanent enhancement to the size and shape of the chin. Once the implant is in place, it typically does not degrade or diminish over time, offering lasting results.

Chin implants provide permanent correction of the receding chin and augment facial profile. For years they provide safe and predictable surgical procedure. Millions of implants have been placed worldwide, most of them made of silicone rubber or porous synthetic material (Porex). Similar materials are used for joint replacement and heart valves. They come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. During your consultation, our plastic surgeons will help you decide which implant is best for you.

What to Expect at Your Chin Implant Appointment

At a chin implant appointment, you can expect a thorough consultation followed by the procedure itself. The consultation is a crucial step where you'll discuss your goals, medical history, and any questions or concerns you may have with the plastic surgeon. The surgeon will evaluate your facial anatomy to determine the most suitable approach for your desired outcome. They may also discuss the different types of implants available and explain the surgical process in detail.

Once you've decided to proceed with the procedure, the actual appointment for the chin implant surgery typically takes a few hours. The length of the procedure can vary depending on factors such as the complexity of the surgery and whether any additional procedures are being performed simultaneously.

How to Prepare for a Chin Implant Procedure

To prepare for your chin implant appointment, follow any pre-operative instructions provided by your plastic surgeon, which may include avoiding certain medications or supplements that can increase the risk of complications.

Ensure you have someone available to drive you home after the procedure, as you may not be able to drive yourself. Arrange for someone to assist you at home during the initial stages of recovery, and stock up on any necessary supplies, such as soft foods and ice packs.

Planning for Recovery after Chin Implants

After a chin implant procedure, it's essential to plan for a period of recovery to ensure proper healing and minimize discomfort. Common side effects during the recovery period may include swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort, which can typically be managed with prescribed pain medication and cold compresses. It's advisable to plan for some downtime, avoiding strenuous activities and sticking to a diet of soft foods for the first few days following surgery.

While individual recovery experiences may vary, most patients can expect swelling and bruising to gradually subside within one to two weeks, with final results becoming more apparent as the tissues fully heal over the following months.

Throughout the recovery process, it is important to follow post-operative care instructions provided by your surgeon, and attend any scheduled follow-up appointments.
