Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size and reshape the breasts by removing excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin. This procedure aims to alleviate physical discomfort, improve breast proportions, and enhance overall well-being for individuals with disproportionately large breasts.

Breast Reduction Explained

Breast reduction surgery is the plastic surgery associated with the highest patient satisfaction. Disproportionate and large breasts can cause physical and emotional distress. Enlarged breasts can lead to many troublesome symptoms including neck/back pain, headaches, rashes under the breast, and difficulty performing physical activity. In addition to these medical concerns, other cosmetic reasons for breast reduction exist including difficulty finding appropriately-fitting clothes and an unbalanced appearance between the breasts and the rest of the body. A breast reduction removes excess breast tissue and skin and lifts the nipple to a more appropriate position. This helps to achieve a breast size more in proportion with your body and reduces the symptoms associated with large breast size.

A breast reduction can be performed as a medically necessary procedure. However, patients can also pursue a breast reduction for cosmetic purposes. A cosmetic breast reduction can help address social stigmas or improve individual appearance by creating a more proportionate, shapely breast.

During the pre-operative consultation, your goals and desires will be discussed including your ideal breast size. Together, a decision will be made to provide the most ideal and long-lasting result for you.

Breast Reduction FAQs

Ideal candidates for breast reduction surgery typically experience physical discomfort, pain, or emotional distress due to disproportionately large breasts. A consultation with a qualified surgeon can assess your individual situation and determine your candidacy based on your health and aesthetic goals.

Downtime varies among individuals, but generally, patients can expect some initial soreness and swelling. Most resume normal activities within a week, with a gradual return to more strenuous exercises after a few weeks. Following post-operative care instructions is crucial for a smoother recovery.

While breast reduction surgery may impact breastfeeding, advancements in surgical techniques aim to preserve milk ducts and maintain breastfeeding capabilities. Discuss your intentions regarding breastfeeding with your surgeon during the consultation.

Like any surgical procedure, breast reduction carries potential risks, including infection, bleeding, and adverse reactions to anesthesia. Your surgeon will thoroughly discuss these risks during the consultation, ensuring you are well-informed before making a decision.

What to Expect During Your Breast Reduction Procedure

At your breast reduction surgery appointment, you can expect a comprehensive and personalized experience centered around your well-being. The initial consultation involves a detailed discussion with your surgeon about your medical history, concerns, and aesthetic goals.

A breast reduction is performed in the operating room with the patient asleep. The incisions used vary based on the patient’s breast measurements, size and degree of ptosis (droopiness). Typically, the incision is in the shape of an “anchor” or “inverted-T,” traveling around the areola, then a vertical line down towards the breast fold, and then a portion within the breast fold. Through this incision, excess breast skin/tissue is removed, and the remaining breast tissue and nipple are re-positioned to an appropriate position using suture techniques. Occasionally, liposuction is used to provide better shape to the breast, particularly in the lateral/outer chest area.

Post-operative care instructions, recovery expectations, and follow-up appointments will be discussed to support a smooth healing process. Throughout, the focus is on your individual needs and achieving a successful and transformative breast reduction experience.

How to Prepare for your Breast Reduction

In preparation for both your breast reduction surgery appointment and the upcoming procedure, diligently follow any pre-operative instructions provided by your surgeon. This includes adhering to fasting guidelines, making necessary medication adjustments, and considering lifestyle considerations. Communicate openly about your medical history, current medications, and any changes in your health since the initial consultation.

Planning for Recovery of your Breast Reduction

Following a breast reduction surgery, it is important to anticipate certain side effects during the recovery period. Patients return home the same day after breast reduction surgery. You will notice your breasts are smaller immediately. Some swelling and bruising will be present which typically resolves by the two-week mark. Aside from strenuous activity or heavy lifting, patients typically resume their normal activities shortly after surgery. After surgery, you will wear a soft, surgical bra for 6 weeks after surgery to help minimize swelling and support the breasts.

Patients often resume normal daily activities within a few weeks, but complete healing, including the resolution of swelling, may take several months. Regular follow-up appointments with your surgeon will monitor your progress and address any concerns, ensuring a successful and comfortable recovery from your breast reduction surgery.
