10 Questions to Ask During Your Breast Surgery Consultation
Published October 1, 2026

Deciding to have breast surgery is personal, and your consultation is an important part of the process. It allows you to talk openly about what you would like to change, learn which surgical options may be appropriate for your body, and understand what you can realistically expect before, during, and after surgery.
Whether you are considering breast augmentation, a breast lift, breast reduction, or a combination of procedures, arriving with questions can help you get more out of your appointment. At New Horizons Center for Cosmetic Surgery, we center these conversations around your anatomy, preferences, medical history, lifestyle, and aesthetic goals.
Here are 10 useful questions to bring to your breast surgery consultation.
1. Which Breast Procedure Is Best Suited to My Goals?
You don’t need to know exactly which procedure you need before walking into your consultation. In fact, part of our job is helping you understand which surgical approach best addresses what you would like to change.
Breast augmentation is primarily used to add volume and enhance breast shape, while a breast lift addresses sagging and repositions the breast. Breast reduction removes excess breast tissue and skin while reshaping the breast. In some cases, combining procedures makes sense. A breast lift with augmentation, for example, can address both breast position and volume.
During your consultation, we’ll evaluate factors such as your breast shape, skin quality, nipple position, proportions, and desired outcome. From there, we can discuss the procedure, or combination of procedures, that may best align with your goals.
2. What Results Are Realistic for My Body?
Bringing inspiration photos to your consultation can be helpful. They give us a sense of the size, shape, and overall aesthetic you prefer. But another patient’s result cannot be replicated exactly because your starting anatomy plays such an important role in what surgery can achieve.
We’ll talk with you about what is realistic based on factors such as your frame, existing breast tissue, skin quality, proportions, and the changes you would like to make.
We can also use Vectra® 3D Computer Imaging to create a three-dimensional model of your breasts and simulate potential changes. For patients considering breast augmentation, this can be particularly useful for visualizing and comparing different implant sizes, shapes, and profiles before making a decision.
3. What Type of Breast Implant Is Right for Me?
If you are considering breast augmentation, ask about the different implant options available and how each could suit your goals. For example, we offer traditional silicone and saline breast implants, as well as Motiva® breast implants.
Traditional silicone implants use cohesive silicone gel to create a soft, natural feel, while saline implants are filled with sterile saltwater after placement. Motiva implants are a newer generation of silicone implants designed with features that support softness, flexibility, and natural movement.
There is no single implant that is right for every patient. Your natural breast tissue, chest width, skin elasticity, desired size and shape, activity level, and whether you are combining augmentation with a breast lift can all influence your surgeon’s recommendation.
During your consultation, ask your surgeon to explain the differences between Motiva and traditional breast implants, including the size, profile, and placement options that may work well for your anatomy.
4. Are There Alternatives to Breast Implants?
For some patients, fat grafting may be an option for breast enhancement. This technique uses fat removed through liposuction from another area of the body, commonly the abdomen or thighs, and transfers it to the breasts.
Ask your surgeon whether fat transfer, implants, or another approach is appropriate for the amount of volume and shape you would like to achieve.
5. Where Will My Incisions and Scars Be?
Scarring is an important part of the conversation before breast surgery. The location and extent of your incisions will depend on the procedure and surgical technique.
For example, a breast lift may use an incision around the areola with a vertical incision toward the breast fold. In some cases, an additional incision along the breast fold may be necessary. Breast reduction incisions also vary depending on breast size, measurements, and the degree of drooping.
Ask your surgeon to show you where your incisions are likely to be and discuss how scars typically change as they heal.
6. What Will My Recovery Look Like?
Recovery is not exactly the same for every patient, even when two people have the same procedure. Your surgical plan, health, lifestyle, and the physical demands of your daily routine can all affect your recovery.
Breast augmentation, breast lift, and breast reduction patients generally return home the same day. During the initial recovery period, you will also have restrictions on strenuous activity and heavy lifting.
We’ll give you more specific guidance based on your procedure, including when you may be able to return to work, drive, exercise, lift heavier objects, and resume other parts of your usual routine. Discussing this ahead of time can help you plan appropriately for time away from work, childcare, household responsibilities, and additional help at home.
7. What Are the Risks of This Procedure?
Every surgical procedure carries potential risks. Your consultation should give you enough information to weigh those risks alongside the potential benefits.
Ask about risks specific to the procedure you are considering, as well as the steps your surgical team takes to support your safety. If you are considering breast implants, this is also a good time to discuss implant-specific considerations and future monitoring.
8. Could Breast Surgery Affect Future Pregnancy or Breastfeeding?
If pregnancy or breastfeeding may be part of your future, bring it up during your consultation. Breast surgery can affect patients differently, and certain procedures may have implications for breastfeeding.
Future pregnancy and weight changes can also affect breast shape and surgical results. Sharing your plans allows your surgeon to consider them when discussing procedure options and timing.
9. Can I See Before-and-After Photos of Patients With Similar Goals?
Before-and-after photos are valuable for more than simply deciding whether you like a particular result. They can also help you communicate what you mean when you describe the size, shape, position, or overall appearance you want.
We maintain a gallery of actual patient results, including breast augmentation and breast lift procedures. During your consultation, it can be helpful to look at patients who started with similar concerns or anatomy and discuss what you like, or do not like, about different outcomes.
Of course, another patient’s result cannot predict exactly what your breasts will look like after surgery. Your anatomy and surgical plan are unique to you. The goal is to use these examples as another tool for making sure we understand what you are hoping to achieve.
10. What Happens If My Goals or Needs Change Over Time?
Breasts naturally change with aging, pregnancy, weight fluctuations, and other factors. Breast implants are also not considered lifetime devices and may require monitoring or additional surgery in the future.
Ask what you should expect in the years following your procedure, including follow-up care and circumstances that might lead to revision surgery. Understanding the long-term picture can help you make a more informed decision now.
